Four years after 3 tube trains and one double decker bus were blown-up in Central London, a memorial to those who died on 7/7/2005 has been unveiled in the south-east corner of Hyde Park, near Curzon Gate. It is an elegant, simple space for contemplation, designed and constructed by a design team including architects Carmody Groarke, engineering team Arup, landscape architects Colvin and Moggridge Ltd, and artist Antony Gormley as consulting artistic advisor to the Project Board. Phil Baines, champion of public lettering, was responsible for the type on the clusters of steel beams. In a flash process, reflecting the speed at which these events took place, the lettering was cast and finish achieved in molten steel. The names of those who lost their lives are on a plaque, separate from the clusters of 52 3.5m high beams that represent each of them. Video of the unveiling from the UK’s Telegraph newspaper, here. Fitting inspiration for the WTC memorial.
